The new Hazzys flagship is a highly visible design statement that draws inspiration from traditional building methods as well the brand's core references to quintessentially English rowing club culture, a culture centred around a passion sports, the idea of community and club life, dressing elegantly, and reflecting traditional crafts and culture. The building is a quasi free-standing structure which is entirely clad with luminous glass shingles to filter views and daylight. Shingles are found both in nature where they act as a kind of shield to animals, as well as in vernacular architecture where the shingle provides external protection from the elements. For Hazzys, we translated the shingle into large scale facade elements. The building skin is semi-transparent to bring in light during the day and to light up to the city at night. The vernacular shingle is transformed into a contemporary expression. It reminds both of traditional construction methods, but also of the skin of an animal. Internally, the references to rowing club culture continue. The organic plan shape is structured into different areas by locker room-like wall units, which are finished in lacquered timber and rattan. The flooring is silver travertine marble. The simple palette of materials is enriched by rowing paraphernalia, vintage furniture and colourful rugs. A sweeping staircase leads up to a second floor VIP lounge which overlooks the double height central space and looks out into the city beyond. The project is designed to provide a protected, luxurious and comfortable environment internally and to evoke an emotional and instinctive response from the exterior, to be highly recognisable and iconic, and to set a new language for the Hazzys brand.
